Biography

Mirian Velay Lizancos is an Assistant Professor of Civil Engineering (Materials area). She started her career in Europe, where she completed her Ph.D. in Civil Engineering at the University of A Coruña (Spain) on advanced nondestructive evaluation of eco-concretes and their implementation on full-scale precast beams. She moved to the United States in December 2016 as a Postdoctoral researcher at Purdue University. She founded the Velay Research Group in January 2018 when she got a faculty position at Purdue. Her research areas are sustainable advanced cementitious composites, CO2 capture, waste valorization, proactive materials, non-destructive testing, durability of concrete, nanomodified and multifunctional materials, and LCA of construction materials. Dr. Velay has developed innovative nanomodified cementitious materials with the ability to capture CO2 in an accelerated rate while increasing durability, as well as sustainable self-cleaning materials with minimal addition of nano-TiO2 based on a new process and mixture design, among other discoveries.
